Well here are the lyrics.

I pulled them straight from the free mp3 that you can download from nin.com:

am i still tough enough?
feels like i’m wearing down
is my visciousness
losing ground?
am i taking too much
did i cross a line
i need my role in this
very clearly defined
i need your discipline
i need your help
i need your discipline
you know once i start i cannot help myself
and now it's starting up
feels like i'm losing touch
nothing matters to me
nothing matters as much
i see you left a mark
up and down my skin
i don't know where I end
and where you begin
i need your discipline
i need your help
i need your discipline
you know once i start i cannot help myself
once i start i cannot stop myself

Live Mesh

Microsoft last night took the wraps off of Live Mesh.

What is Live Mesh, you say? Sweet.

I want more info!

Discipline - New Nine Inch Nails Single

Radio stations across the country surprised NIN fans everywhere by playing a new NIN single today - Discipline.

Some kind soul put it on YouTube (not sure how long that'll last).

nin.com has an update saying "2 weeks." Does this mean a new album? A single? It has to be a lot. But how much?

Plain Invitation Tickets were $40 each.
Plain Invitation Parking Passes were $30 each.
Carpool Passes (5 tickets + parking) were $200.

If we even assume that there were only 10,000 people there (that has to be an underestimate) and that every person came in a group of 5 and so all they sold were Carpool passes, that'd be $400,000.

But then there were lots of other options for tickets:

Orange/Green Inside Rail plot + 4 tickets = $300.
Orange/Green Infield plot + 4 tickets = $275.

And then there were lots of ones where the prices aren't even listed on the website (which generally means $$$$$$).

How many people come to Foxfield? 10k? 15k? 20k? The attendance estimates for 2001 were between 28k and 30k. So if you take that at 30k (just to make the numbers easier) and use my original assumption (which would be the minimum amount of money they'd make), then they'd be getting $1.2 million.

Damn.

I guess that's what happens when the University takes away all of the events (easters, midwinters, etc) from the students and this is the only event that can come close to filling that void (though I know it's nowhere close to the same kind of event).

Dolphins Take the Wrong Long

It is being widely reported now that the Miami Dolphins have agreed to a contact with Michigan's Jake Long to be the #1 overall draft pick in the 2008 NFL Draft this weekend.

The 2nd pick belongs to the St. Louis Rams. The likely favorites are FSU, Miami and UNC. NC State and Virginia also have an outside shot at the title. My prediction? Miami.

Men's Lacrosse - The tournament this weekend will decide this title, and Duke has to be the favorite. I think Virginia is the only team that stands a chance at taking that title from their hands. My prediction? Duke.

Women's Lacrosse - Maryland is the #1 seed in the tournament this weekend with Virginia the #2 seed. Duke and North Carolina also have a chance. My prediction? Virginia.

Softball - North Carolina and Virginia Tech are in a league of their own atop the ACC standings right now. My prediction? North Carolina.

Predicted Final Title Results:

Virginia: 6 Titles
North Carolina: 5 Titles
Florida State: 4 Titles
Virginia Tech: 3 Titles
Clemson: 2 Titles
Duke: 2 Titles
Boston College: 1 Title
Maryland: 1 Title
Miami: 1 Title

ACC and Commonwealth National Championships

This list will probably need updating at the end of this year but this is pretty interesting stuff. UNC and Maryland really dominate and a lot of that has to do with the women's sports they've been so good at. Its interesting to see that of Maryland's 9 Men's Lacrosse titles, 7 of them were USILA, meaning before 1971. Our boxing national title makes me smile. I remember seeing pictures from the old matches when I was researching U.Va.'s history. I wonder where ODU got their dominance in Field Hockey from? I'll let the other elephant in the room speak for itself.

* - To explain the inclusion of the non-NCAA national titles here, I'll just quote what shakerhoo himself said when posting this list:

The AIAW governed women's sports prior to 1981, the USILA awarded National Championships in men's lacrosse prior to 1971 when that sport became sanctioned by the NCAA, and the ITA has awarded National Indoor Tennis Championships for over 40 years. All those are LEGITIMATE national championships. Anyone who thinks not, must also throw out all the AP, UPI, and USA Today championships in football, because those are not sanctioned by the NCAA either.

Spring Sports Update - April 20, 2008

A couple more things happened today to finish off the weekend, so I thought I'd go ahead and post about them.

The #1 ranked (and #1 seeded) Men's Tennis team whooped Miami today 4-0 to claim the 2008 ACC Championship. This is the second ACC Championship in a row for the Cavaliers and the 4th in five years. Treat Huey was named MVP of the tournament. Now we have to wait about a week and a half to see what the first round of the NCAA Tournament will look like, but it's pretty much a sure thing that we'll be hosting the first round (4 teams in single-elimination competition).

The #16 ranked Baseball team got a painful dose of defeat yesterday, losing to Wake Forest 14-3. Thankfully, they turned things around in the rubber match today and beat the Demon Deacons 3-2 in 11 innings to take the series win. Hopefully the pollsters and the NCAA folks only look at that series win and not the score of that second game...

The #21 ranked Women's Golf team looked like they might be able to pull off an upset this weekend at the ACC Championships but they fell just short. The lady Hoos had been in first place pretty much the entire weekend (at one point holding the top 3 individual scores) but #1 Duke came back and beat them by 1 stroke. It would have been a huge win for the Cavaliers as Duke has now won 13 consecutive ACC titles, but it was an impressive showing nonetheless.

As I mentioned in the previous post, the #4 ranked Women's Lacrosse team had to wait for things to get sorted out in the standings to solidify who and when they would be playing in the ACC Tournament next weekend. Well, now it's official. The Cavaliers have the #2 seed in the tournament and play their first game at 3pm on Friday. Their opponent will be the winner of the Duke/Virginia Tech game which will be held Thursday at 1pm. All of these games are being played at Scott Stadium, while the men's tournament is being played at Klockner.

Spring Sports Update - April 19, 2008

Just a couple of quick comments on what's been going on so far this weekend in U.Va. spring sports:

Yesterday at a painfully early 9am match, the #1 ranked (and #1 seeded) Men's Tennis team defeated #50 (and #8 seeded) North Carolina State by a 4-1 margin in the quarter-finals of the ACC Tournament. They had just defeated NCSU the Friday before by a score of 5-2.
In a much more reasonably-timed outing, the #16 ranked Baseball team defeated Wake Forest 4-2 in a night game at Davenport Field. They've got another night game coming up tonight in less than 3 hours.
This morning, the Men's Tennis team continued our domination of the Demon Deacons from Winston Salem, defeating #28 ranked and #4 seeded Wake 4-1 in the semi-finals of the ACC Tournament. Once again, this is a team they had played just the previous weekend, rocking them 7-0 last Sunday. The still-undefeated Hoos take on the winner of the the 3/7 match between #10 FSU and #25 Miami. Miami took the doubles point but is losing in most of the singles matches so far.
In a beautiful spring time match-up at Klockner, the #4 ranked Men's Lacrosse team defeated Dartmouth 11-7. The game was relatively uneventful, but probably the biggest thing we saw was that Bud Petit was back from his injury he sustained against Duke and had several good stops including a couple right on the doorstep against the player that is supposedly Dartmouth's best finisher. That's promising going into the ACC Tournament (next weekend in Charlottesville; the first game is against Maryland Friday night at 7:30 at Klockner).
The #4 Women's Lacrosse team finished their season during the week, downing #12 George Mason 16-3. U.Va. scored the first 14 goals of the game, holding Mason scoreless until 17:52 remained in the 2nd period (over 42 minutes of perfect defense). That game finished a perfect home season for the ladies. I'm not positive on their position in the ACC Tournament next weekend (also in Charlottesville, but the games will be played at Scott Stadium). I think that they'll be the #2 seed (same record as Maryland, but the Terps beat them during the regular season) and play the winner of the Duke/VT game (which will probably be Duke since VT has not won in the ACC yet this season). We should be playing in the 5:30 game Friday night at Scott. I'll post a bit more once things are really finalized.
The #3 ranked Women's Rowing team achieved a major feat this weekend. They won the 9th consecutive ACC Championship in rowing, having won every year that the event has existed. Kevin Sauer, head coach of the team was named ACC Coach of the Year for the 5th time and the Varsity 8 crew was named ACC Crew of the Year. Virginia won 3 of the 4 competitions, winning the First Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and First Varsity 4 while coming in second in the Novice 8. Clemson finished 2nd in the 3 races that Virginia won, while winning the one race Virginia did not win. The ladies still have another set of races against Yale and Harvard before heading to the South/Central regionals of the NCAAs in mid-May.

ACC Men's Tennis Awards

Virginia captured two of the three individual awards and landed three players on the All-ACC team.

Virginia's Somdev Devvarman, the #1 player in the country (and part of the #1 doubles team in the country) was named the ACC Player of the Year.

Coach Brian Boland won ACC Coach of the Year for the 2nd time in his short tenure at U.Va.

Treat Huey (Somdev's partner on that #1 doubles team) and Sanam Singh (a freshman phenom who had just a terrific year) were the Cavaliers that joined Somdev on the All-ACC team.

The Wahoos have a bye in the first round of the ACC Tournament that starts today. The Cavaliers did not even drop a single set the entire match en route to putting the finishing touches on a perfect 25-0 regular season.

The doubles point was more closely contested than the final result might make you think, but the Hoos ended up taking all 3 doubles matches including a tie break at #2 doubles.

The singles match-ups did not appear close at all. All 6 players won in straight sets as the Cavs took 73 games to the Demon Deacons' 34.

This team, led by the nation's #1 singles player Somdev Devaarman and the nation's #1 doubles pair (Devaarman and Treat Huey) has been the #1 team in the country since the beginning of the season. They won 25 matches total, including 8 against top 10 teams and 13 more against #11-50. Along the way they managed to pick up the National Team Indoors title (handing losses to then #8 UCLA, then #5 Ole Miss and then #3 Ohio State in the process).

Today's 7-0 win gives the Cavaliers an absolutely dominating total of 141-28 on the season.

Next up: The 2008 ACC Tournament in Altamonte Springs, FL next weekend. I have no idea where that is, but MapPoint tells me it's about halfway between Tallahassee and Miami, so at least neither of them get home court advantage.

After that: The NCAA Tournament starts May 9th and if I remember correctly, we should get to host the first weekend.

Definitely a season to remember for these great representatives of The University.

Men Rally to Defeat Tar Heels

Wow, what a game. Amazing.

Maryland went down earlier in the day to Navy so we should jump up a spot to #3 because of that. Lacrosse teams.

The women's team, currently ranked #4 in the country, defends Klockner stadium against ACC foe Boston College today at 1pm. The ladies currently sit in first place in the ACC, a half game ahead of both #3 Maryland and Boston College. This game is a must-win to stay at the top of the conference.

The #4 Men's team is down in Chapel Hill trying to bounce back from an embarrassing loss to Maryland last weekend. They're facing the #6 North Carolina Tar Heels in a game that the Cavs must win if they hope to stay out of the cellar in the ACC and avoid playing Duke in the first round of the ACC tournament. It looks like we're going to see a change in goalie this week as upperclassmen Bud Petit will replace the much-heralded but still very rough around the edges freshman Adam Ghitelman. The game is at 4pm and will be [sort of] televised on ESPNU.

Zimmerman Opening Day Hero in New Ballpark

Former U.Va. baseball star Ryan Zimmerman made the Washington Nationals' first ballgame in their new park one to remember.

The third baseman, already fairly well-known for his heroics, hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Nationals a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

Photo from espn.com courtesy of the Associated Press/Nick Wass

Friendly Reminder to Depressed Cavalier Fans: We're #1 (Twice!)

There's a lot of grief coming from people who are upset that the basketball season is finally over (and thus the "major") sports season is over for this school year.

Well, I just wanted to drop a reminder that we have a lot going on in the world of U.Va. sports still and some of it has to do with some very good programs (all rankings are national rankings):

#1 Men's Tennis team. Undefeated on the season. #1 player in the country. #1 doubles team in the country. They take on Miami and Florida State this weekend in Charlottesville.
#1 Men's Lacrosse team. Also undefeated on the season. Two of the top four scorers in the country are on our team, and we have potentially the two most exciting freshmen in the country in the Bratton twins. They have a big game at Maryland on Saturday.
#4 Women's Lacrosse team. They've had a couple tough losses, but continue to play strong. They just beat JMU last night. They too have a big road ACC match this weekend with Duke.
#15 Baseball team. They have some curious losses on the season and haven't been as dominant in the last couple weeks as they looked like they might be. But they've got a strong pitching staff and should be able to recover.

I realize this are the so-called non-revenue sports. But they are all exciting to watch, and they should all make us proud to be Cavalier fans.

On Deadlines, Annoying

It's bad to have one deadline looming.

It's worse to have two deadlines looming.

It's even worse still to have two deadlines looming on the same day in vastly different areas of your job description.

That has been my life for the last couple of weeks.

Tomorrow, 3pm, is the deadline. But here it is.

Sean Singletary scored 8 points in a span of about 26 seconds last night to take the Cavaliers from a 4 point deficit (70-74) to a 3 point lead 78-75. The whole series of plays - two free throws, a banked-in three pointer, a steal, a layup and one - was amazing. My boss had his jacket on ready to leave. And then all of a sudden, the crowd was going wild and Sean was pumping his fist and the Hoos were on their way to the Final Four of the CBI.

I would have rather the game be a little less of a contested match-up, but I'll take the win (and more Singletary at JPJ) however I can get it.

My tickets for tomorrow's game against Bradley are waiting in my inbox. I know nothing about Bradley, so I'm looking forward to some insightful analysis from TheSabre...

Lady Hoos Win Big, Set Up Double-Header With ODU

The 4-seeded Women's Basketball team crushed UCSB late last night, 86-52. The win in the first round of the Women's NCAA Tournament sets up a match-up with the 5 seed, ODU who beat Liberty earlier in the day. There was a similar margin in that game, with the Lady Monarchs taking the victory by 20, 82-62.

The unfortunate part for the Hoos is that ODU is the host (something that can't happen in the men's game as far as I know) of this region and while we're the higher seed, we'll be playing on their home court.

The interesting part is that Virginia has a chance to beat ODU twice in two days - the Men's team plays ODU tonight in the "Elite Eight" of the CBI tournament. Thankfully, that game is on our home floor and I'll be right there at center court to watch it.

Cvillain.com - How Did I Miss This?

A friend was asking me some questions about juicycampus.com for a project she's working on for a class at U.Va. I hadn't heard about it, so we were talking and the discussion lead us to streakthelawn.com (down now). In looking into that some more, I happened across cvillain.com. Very interesting. Quite entertaining.

I'm quite amused by the "we older people are better than those silly 20-somethings" attitude in the thread about streakthelawn.com shutting down. I guess one of these days I'll get that kind of attitude. Men's Lacrosse team all but assured themselves the #1 ranking when the polls come out on Monday by defeating Johns Hopkins 13-12 today in front of a record crowd at Klockner Stadium.

The game remained close as neither team had a lead of more than 2 points at any time.

Too many players had solid games for me to really list. It was just an impressive performance against the defending national champions.

I am, however, a little worried about face-offs and our goalie. But as long as we keep finding ways to win.........

March Madness is...
